LULLABY Songs (लोरी) :: LAXMIKANT-PYARELAL

LULLABY Songs  (लोरी) ::  LAXMIKANT-PYARELAL

Basically Lullaby (लोरी) is a crib song and is soothing song or music, as well. It is played for or sung for children. The reasons for which a lullabies are  sung varies from region to region. It is used to help to develop the tradition or cultural knowledge. Lullabies are also used to expand communication skills, to illustrate  sentimental desire, keeping the infants’ undivided attention, to modulate the infants’ arousal and to regulate their behavior. One of the most important functions of lullabies is to aid infants to sleep. Thus, the music is mostly simple and keeps repeating.

Hindi Films have some beautiful melodious Lullabies composed by various composers. Few symphonious Lullabies composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal are being discussed below.

Ram Kare Aisa Ho Jaye     “MILAN”   (1967)
(Singer:- Mukesh.  Lyricist:- Anand Bakshi)

Extremely melodious song, mellifluously sung by Mukesh  in the form of "LORI". Entire song is woven around the ear-pleasing glimpses of FLUTE as a 'filler' and also in all the interludes. MANDOLIN is also used in the 'interludes'. DHOLAK/Tabla 'rhythm' is just simply mind-blowing and suits the  theme of the song. It is filmed on SUNIL DUTT and NUTAN.

Ek Gagan Ka Raja     “DARPAN”   (1970)
(Singer:- Lata Mangeshkar.  Lyricist:- Anand Bakshi)

An exceedingly accordant ‘lullaby’ supported with sweet-sounding DHOLAK rhythm.  Simple orchestration in the “interludes” by using SAROD, FLUTE and Symphony VIOLINS.  Also enjoy the ‘rhythmic’ as well as singing “pause” at the end of each “antara”. The song is filmed on WAHEEDA REHMAN and the child artist baby GUDDI.

Soi Ja Tara     “MASTANA”   (1971)
(Singer:- Kishore Kumar - Hemlata.  Lyricist:- Anand Bakshi)

This is filmed on actor Mehmood and beautiful child artist Nain-Tara Dhanraj.   Extremely melodious and emotional song with wonderful DHOLAK rhythm. The song is orchestrated with symphony VIOLINS, FLUTE and SANTOOR.

Ai Meri Ankhon Ke Pehle     “MAN  MANDIR”    (1972)
(Singer:- Mukesh- Lata Mangeshkar.  Lyricist:-Rajendra Krishan)

Melodic sad duet filmed on WAHEEDA REHMAN - SANJEEV KUMAR. Instrumented with SITAR, VIOLINS and wonderful DHOLAK rhythm.

So Ja Re Soja     “SAADI  KE BAAD”    (1972)
(Singer:- Lata Mangeshkar.  Lyricist:- Anand Bakshi)

An extremely melodious song rendered by Lata Mangeshkar.  Lataji’s HUMMING in “prelude” and in first “interlude” mesmerizes. Wonderfully orchestrated with FLUTE,  ACOUSTIC GUITAR, VIOLINS, SITAR and BANSURI. Without affecting the sweetness of the song, sound of “air” (हवा ) is beautifully incorporated.  The song has soothing BONGA DRUM rhythm. It is filmed on actor Jeetendra and Rakhee.

Kahaniyan Sunati Hai     “RAJPUT”   (1982)
(Singer:- Mohammad Rafi.  Lyricist:- Anand Bakshi)

GUST sound ( हवा का झोंका ) is awesomely intermixed with symphony style VIOLINS. CELLOs sounds resonant in SYMPHONY used in the ‘interludes’.  Modulations of the CHORUS sound used at the end is an added component of the song. Those were the Disco dancing years. Only Laxmikant-Pyarelal  could have thought of such great tunes. Besides the emotional rendition, Rafi Sahab has instilled mesmerizing effect besides singing "for" DHARMENDRA keeping in mind all of  his actions to make this song a super hit.

Zoo Zoo ..Yashoda Ka Nandlala    “SANJOG”  (1986)
(Singer:- Lata Mangeshkar.  Lyricist:- Anjan )

The beauty of this song is Lataji’s crooning in lullaby style  Ju Ju Ju Ju, Yashoda Ka Nandlala (जु जु जु जु जु जु , यशोदा का नंदलाला ). It has a accordant DHOLAK rhythm. ‘Interludes’ are orchestrated with JAZZ FLUTE, symphony style VIOLINS as well as SITAR. Song is filmed on Jaya Prada.  The woman has lost her memory due to an emotional shock. She thinks the child, who died in an accident, is still alive and she keeps singing this song for the child to go to sleep, holding a doll in her hands.

Lullabies in Hindi films  have been picturized in different ways in the past.  It is unfortunate that today’s filmmakers do not give any importance to lullabies in movies.
